MATIJS VAN DE KERKHOF (1977)
De schilderijen van Matijs van de Kerkhof hebben zelden een titel. De sfeer in zijn schilderijen is unheimlich en inert. Eenzaamheid en bizarre situaties worden in duistere, het licht nauwelijks te verdragen sfeer weergegeven, die moeilijk te beschrijven valt. Donkere partijen waarin het licht binnengluurt overheersen. Het licht kan als een bundel – primitief – worden weergegeven die doet denken aan middeleeuwse schilderijen, maar ook broeierig vanuit een onbekende bron binnensluipen als een dief. Matijs van de kerkhof wordt geïnspireerd door films met een sterk psychomachische en psychomagische inslag als de alchemist Alejandro Jodorowsky, David Lynch, waarin vreemd licht hallucinerend werkt, de films van Kenneth Anger, Federico Fellini, John Waters en Alex van Warmerdam. In de literatuur door Billy Collins, Jack Kerouac en Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde’s gedicht ‘In The Gold Room-A Harmony’ heeft Matijs van de Kerkhof omgezet in een eigen muziekcompositie.

Invloeden van schilders als Francis Bacon, Edward Hopper, Giorgio de Chirico, Eric Fishl en Gerge Bellows inspireren Matijs van de Kerkhof tot sterke eigen beelden.
The paintings of Matijs van de Kerkhof rarely have titles. The atmosphere in his paintings is uncanny and inert. Loneliness and bizarre situations are represented in a dark atmosphere which hardy bears light and is hard to describe. Dark areas in which light seeps in dominate. The light can be represented as a shaft – primitively – which reminds of medieval paintings, but it can also sneak in from an unknown source, in a sultry way, like a thief. Matijs van de Kerkhof is inspired by movies with a strong psychosomachic and psychomagic bias like that alchemist Alejandro Jodorowsky, David Lynch, in which strange light works in a hallucinating way, the movies of Kenneth Anger, Federico Fellini, John Waters and Alec van Warmerdam. In the literature of Billy Collins, Jack Kerouac and Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde’s poem “In The Gold Room – A Harmony”was put to music by Matijs van de Kerkhof in a composition of his own.
